Materials Science focuses on understanding the intrinsic structure of a material and the control of its structure through processing. It studies the relationship of the engineering properties of the three main classes of materials (metals, polymers and ceramics) as well as composites and semiconductors.
Materials Scientists are in high demand internationally - particularly within the thriving polymer/plastics, metals, and ceramics and composites industries. Your detailed understanding of material properties will help you to make important decisions on how to develop new materials and which materials should be used for specific products or applications.

Students must demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken English. The University's English language entry requirements are: IELTS (Academic) - 6.0 overall (no band less than 5.5); iBT (internet based) TOEFL - 80 with a score of 21 in writing; Pearson PTE Academic - Overall score of 50 with no PTE communicative skills below 42; Waikato Pathways - Successful completion of Level 7 with a B grade average in the Certificate of Attainment in Academic English (CAAE) program.
Special Admission: Applicants will be considered on a case by case basis. Applicants 20 years old and over by the beginning of their programme of study will be accepted, except those that are clearly insufficiently prepared for academic study. Preference may be given to applicants who have successfully completed appropriate Waikato Pathways College bridging programmes.
