Designed for recent graduates and practicing engineers who want to upgrade and update their knowledge in the rapidly changing fields of electronics, materials and processing and mechanical engineering, the Master of Engineering Practice (MEngPrac) is a taught programme that may be completed in either 12 or 18 months.
The programme was developed not only in response to the demand from New Zealand employers for work-ready engineers able to tackle the challenges of the changing global, national and local environments, but to also meet the demand of international students who are looking at improving their employability with a taught master’s degree. The MEngPrac will enable you to work in diverse industries and fields in New Zealand and worldwide.
The programme includes a management component that will equip you with the professional skills demanded by employers. It also includes a capstone research and development project that will allow you to apply your advanced technical skills to an industrially relevant problem. This is a unique opportunity for young professionals to extend their skills and expertise in their chosen field.

Candidates for the programme must:
Have completed a relevant 3 or 4 year undergraduate qualification in a related discipline with at least a B grade average across the final year papers and
Satisfy the prerequisites for graduate study in the subject(s) being presented for the degree.
If an applicant has professional engineering experience, they may be admitted to the programme at the discretion of the University of Waikato’s Academic Board.
You also need to meet an English language entry requirement as follows: IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 overall (no band less than 6.0); iBT (internet based) TOEFL - 90 with a score of 21 in writing; Pearson PTE Academic - Overall score of 58 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50; Waikato Pathways - successful completion of Level 8 with a B grade average in the Certificate of Attainment in English Language (CAEL) programme.
